Origins and Evolution
Capture Bizarre is an Argentine humor site that, since its creation in 2014, has captured the attention of millions of users in the country. Inspired by the popular site 9gag, which dominated the digital scene before the emergence of local platforms, Capture Bizarre has become a fundamental space for internet humor in Argentina, attracting a community of over six million people.
Founded by Mauricio Vesprini, a Marketing graduate who currently directs the project, the site has managed to adapt to changes in digital content consumption, maintaining its relevance and popularity in a competitive environment.
The Name and the Platform
The name "Capture Bizarre" is derived from the original practice of sharing screenshots with errors or humorous details found on social networks. The structure of the site, although it has evolved, retains some similarity to a traditional blog, facilitating user navigation and participation. These "captures" and memes, generally accompanied by text boxes, serve as humorous comments or descriptions that contextualize the image.
The content on Capture Bizarre is varied, ranging from memes about everyday life to humorous critiques of politicians, artists, and public figures. The satires, parodies, and short stories published reflect both the creativity of the users and the global trends in internet humor. Any registered user can create and share these pieces, although, since 2018, creations must be approved by the Capture Bizarre team before being published.
One of the most notable memes that circulated on the platform was the Bernie Sanders meme in 2021, which gained significant attention not only for its humor but also because it became a source of fundraising for charitable causes in Vermont, United States.
Academic Impact and Recognitions
During the preventive and mandatory social isolation in 2020, Capture Bizarre experienced significant growth in its number of users. This surge caught the attention of academia, specifically the National University of Río Negro, which began using the case of Capture Bizarre as study material in its marketing courses. Members of the site’s team participated in lectures, and university members presented their analyses of the platform’s growth and influence.
In 2024, the success and influence of Capture Bizarre were recognized with nominations in the prestigious Ídolo Argentina and Martín Fierro Digital awards in the categories of "memes" and "community and memes," respectively. These nominations highlight the site’s ongoing impact on Argentine digital culture and its ability to adapt and thrive in a constantly changing environment.
